Jayanti - May 13
by Dr. Shanker Adawal
Worshipping Gods and Goddesses (Dev-poojan) is an age-old tradition in India. ‘Dev’ represents that kind of regime which is very humane and can be performed by humans. This regime is related to birth and death. The word ‘Devi’ is also used to denote the same thing as ‘Dev”. In the bhakti literature, Devi has an independent source of prowess. This is permanent and the whole world has originated from this:
Nityaev sa jaganmurtistya sarvmidam tatam.
Of the 10 great skills/knowledge (vidyas) mentioned in Agnipuran, Bagulamukhi is a proven vidya.
Satye kali cha shri vidya kamla bhuvneshvari
Sidh Vidhya Maheshani trishaktibargala shive.
Here ‘bagula’ has been accepted as the source of three powers. To get justice it is important to perform bagulamukhi sadhna. By doing this a person becomes fearless and he can win over the enemies. Thus, it gives both defensive power and the power to conquer.
There are confusions about the understanding of the term ‘bagulamukhi’. Generally, it is equated with goddess whose face resembles that of a bird ‘bagula’. According to shashtras, this implies power which can get rid of evil deeds of enemies. In Swatantra Tantra, there is also a mention of the arrival of ‘Devi’. According to this, when the world was passing through a catastrophe of cyclone, lord Vishnu started worshipping. It is said that during that time bagulamukhi was born in Saurashtra. This is accepted as ‘veer ratri’, which is related to chaturdashi, bhaumvar and kula naskhstra.
In tantras, there are mentions of various meditators. First, lord brahma preached about this to some saints. It is said that Parsurm and Narad were also preached. By the mercy of the Goddess parsuram was blessed with ‘stambhan power’ and due to this he could win over all his enemies.
There are two types of bhagawati worship: mantra like and tantra like. The mantra for this is:
Om Hleem Bagla Mukhi Sarva Dusthanam Vaacham Mukham Paadam
Stambhaya Jihvyam kilaya Buddhim Vinaashaya Hleem Om Swaha
.
With the blessing of the Goddess, the enemy’s speech and face is paralyzed and they are stripped of intelligence. This is also said that gayatri mantra is recited to please all the Gods and Goddesses. For bagulamukhi worship too, gayatri mantra is used. For this worship use of the word Ohm is essential. For wealth, peace, passion, land etc use of Ye, klin, Yen and Ln in the end is essential.
One should use yellow clothes, yellow flowers, yellow sandal and yellow garland for worship. “Shri bagulamukhi anushthan rahasyam’. There are enough information available in the granthas. Before reciting mantra, harida ganpati recital is essential. In the end reciting of ‘baglahridyam’ is also essential.
The other name of bhagwati bagulamukhi is Pitambara. Yellow is the favourite colour of the Goddess. Therefore, the Goddess is very generous. If the instrument is of Gold then this is considered to be the best. There are Bindus, trikon, shadkon, ashtakon, sodash and britaitraya instruments. Historical location of the Goddess is in Datiya. There are stories related to this place. The person responsible for making this place world famous was Brahmaleen Swami Ji Maharak. In 1929 he came from Dhaulpur (Rajasthan) to Datiya. No one could find out his name. This place is also related to the establishment of Khandeshwara temple by Aswasthama. At present there is a famous shaktipeeth. One can achieve mokhsa by worshipping the Goddess and can also win over his/her enemies. At Dheenapur and Pihova, other ‘Pitambara Peeth’ were established. The rules of worship are supervised by Mahan Vanshipuri and Bheempuri.
