ILLUSION OF SHANIDEV
Who can escape the influence of Shanidev? He is a facilitator as well as destroyer. If he puts us in difficult position, he also brings us out of the trouble. According to an old tradition story, there was a Brahmin in a village who was involved in worshipping the Lord Shiva all the time. His heart had become pious due to dedication. But the greed to acquire something more had not completely gone out of him. While he was worshipping one day, Shanidev appeared before him. He said that you have pleased Lord Shiva by his worship but your greed to acquire something more has not petered out completely. This is not good for you. Falsifying Shanidev, he argued that he had no such greed. Shanidev became angry over this and he said that he will definitely test him one day.
The Brahmin took that warning very seriously. He worshipped more now so that he can get rid of greed completely. The Brahmin used to go to the river everyday for taking bath. One day he saw a pumpkin and a cloth flowing with the river. He could not control himself and grabbed the flowing objects. With those objects, he marched towards his home. On the way, he met a constable of the king. Seeing the Brahmin carrying something wrapped in kingly dress, he developed certain doubts. He asked the Brahmin, “What are you carrying?” He said there is nothing except a pumpkin. But the police man did not listen to him and took him to the king. He said to the king that he had killed the prince and was carrying his head wrapped in his dress.
The king put him in jail. Then suddenly the Brahmin remembered the warning of Shanidev. He regretted that he did not take the advice of Shanidev seriously. He realized that he had turned arrogant while worshipping Lord Shiva and ignored the majesty of Shanidev. He immediately apologized to Shanidev and prayed.
Shanidev became happy with the worship because he was a dedicated worshipper. He was never involved in any unholy activities. Shanidev wanted that he should progress further in worshipping. Shanidev had deliberately created this prank so that the Brahmin could understand his weaknesses.
Once the Brahmin worshipped Shanidevta and tendered apology, he was forgiven. Suddenly the prince also came running in the laps of the king. The king went to that Brahmin and prostrated before the Brahmin. He apologized for his mistake. Then Brahmin explained that there was a pumpkin wrapped in the dress but the police did not listen to him and dragged him to the court. The police did not even bother to open up the clothes. You also did not try to investigate and put me behind the wars. No king should do this. The king had already heard from the prince that his dress went into the river and flew with the current.
The king tendered apology and departed him with great respect. The Brahmin realized the importance of Shanidev and realized how he got rid of his greed. He recognized his weakness and took a resolve that he will be careful not to make mistakes in the future. Hence, both positive and negative eyes of Shanidevta are meant for the welfare of a person.
